Casper Braat, born in 1991 in Amsterdam. Casper Braat graduated from the designLAB department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2015 with the installation McJezus. In 2019, he attended the Dirty Art Department at the Sandberg Instituut. Since 2018, Braat has been represented by Torch Gallery in Amsterdam (NL), and since 2025 by Aeroplastics in Brussels (BE). His first solo exhibition, Forever, opened at Torch in 2020. The series transformed everyday home appliances into marble sculptures and was later presented during Dutch Design Week Eindhoven in 2022 and 2024. In 2023, Braat presented Departures, an installation recreating the atmosphere of an airport terminal through marble travel objects, an automated ‘Art Vending Machine’ and the 12-hour film ‘Waiting in Limbo’. The project is shown in solo exhibitions across Europe, and ‘Waiting in Limbo’ is on view at Museum MORE at the end of 2026. During a 2024 residency at the Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen, China, Braat made the film ‘Workweek’, in which he carved one cubic meter of marble down to one cubic centimeter over 20 days. The film became the starting point for Work in Progress, an installation staging a fictional version of Braat’s marble carving atelier, In 2026, Braat began experimenting with robotic marble carving during the Digital Stone Project in Carrara, Italy. From late 2026 through 2027 he lives and works in Shanghai, China, at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel, where he has begun making 2D marble inlays. These works became part of Survival, a series exploring consumer culture, crisis and the unstable value of art. Braat’s work can exist anywhere on the planet as consumerism has become the universal global visual language.
